Nicaragua Independence Public Holidays September 12-20

The Ministry of Labor of Nicaragua's Government of Reconciliation and National Unity (MITRAB) has decreed that September 14 and 15, 2020, would be mandatory national public holidays in Nicaragua, and that September 16-17-18 would be public sector holidays ("el día 14 y 15 de septiembre será feriado nacional obligatorio, y del 16 al 18 de septiembre será asueto a cuenta de vacaciones en Nicaragua por motivos de las fiestas patrias").

The annual September 14 and 15 public holidays of Nicaragua commemorate the Battle of San Jacinto and Nicaragua's Independence.

The aforementioned decree's text first addresses the September 14-15 public holidays "in accordance with article 66 of the labor code, September 14 and 15 are mandatory National holidays with the right to rest and salary for all workers in the country" before turning to the extended public sector holidays, "holidays are declared on Wednesday 16, Thursday 17 and Friday 18 September of the current month and year, for public sector workers, decentralized entities both at the national and municipal level, they will enjoy the homeland week leaving the Friday, September 11, at the end of the working day, returning to their ordinary work on Monday, September 21, 2020".

Last year (2019-09-12 and 2019-09-06), the Saturday and Sunday, September 14-15, 2019, non-working public holidays of Nicaragua were extended by 2 days, Monday and Tuesday, September 16 and 17, 2019.
