The Governor of Bermuda, Rena Lalgie, has signed the proclamation declaring Monday, October 18, 2021, a public holiday in honour of Flora Duffy, Bermuda’s first Olympic gold medalist.
Following last summer's gold medal by Flora Duffy at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics, the government of Bermuda, with support from the opposition, had announced that it was considering how to commemorate Bermudan (2021-07-28).
Then, in early September, the government of Bermuda, invited Her Excellency the Governor to designate October 18, 2021, as a one-off public holiday (2021-09-10).
The Bill to create a one-off Flora Duffy public holiday then passed with unanimous support in the Bermuda House of Assembly, a couple of weeks ago (2021-09-25).
In 1979, Bermuda similarly declared a one-off half-day public holiday to mark the victory of Gina Swainson at that year's Miss World Pageant.
