Cayman Islands Swaps May 26 And April 14 Public Holidays

The Cayman Islands' Government Information Services has published a revised list of 2021 public holidays in the Cayman Islands, in which the previously declared electoral public holiday on May 26, 2021, has been replaced by a public holiday on Wednesday, April 14, 2021, the date of the new snap General Election.

Wednesday, May 26, 2021, had been declared a public holiday, last spring (2020-05-25), and was included in the official list of 2021 Cayman Islands public holidays announced by the office of the Deputy Governor's Office of the Cayman Islands, last autumn (2020-10-14).

Following the change of date of the upcoming elections from May 26 to April 14, 2021, the Public Holidays Order, 2021, was gazetted declaring Wednesday, April 14, 2021, as a one-off public holiday (2021-02-24).

But the Public Holidays Order, 2021 makes no mention of the previously-declared public holiday on Wednesday, May 26, 2021, leading many in the Cayman Islands to dream of a "bonus holiday".

A couple of weeks ago, the Cayman Islands' Elections Supervisor, Wesley Howell, was quoted as stating that the public holiday on Wednesday, May 26, 2021, would need to be canceled specifically ("I think Cabinet has to make a decision as to whether or not they make an express provision that it will be a public holiday or rescind the public holiday and replace it with April 14th").

As per a spokesperson for the Cayman Islands Government Information Services, referring to the May 26 public holiday, the "government had not published an order in relation to the May date, so it was never officially confirmed and therefore did not need to be cancelled".
