The ministre du travail, emploi et prévoyance sociale of the government of the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Néné Nkulu, has released a communiqué announcing that Saturday and Sunday, January 16-17, 2021, would be non-working public holidays in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

The aforementioned communiqué recalls that January 16 and 17 are annual public holidays in the Democratic Republic of the Congo ("Madame la ministre d'État, ministre de l'emploi, travail et prévoyance sociale, informe le public en général et les organisations professionnelles d'employeurs et de travailleurs en particulier, qu'aux termes de l'ordonnance n°14/010 du 14 mai 2014 fixant la liste des jours fériés légaux en République démocratique du Congo, les journées du samedi et du dimanche 17 janvier 2021, dédiées respectivement aux héros nationaux M'zee Laurent Désiré Kabila et Patrice Emery Lumumba, sont déclarées chromées et payées sur toute l'étendue du territoire national."), as confirmed in the recent announcement of the 2021 DR Congo public holidays (2021-01-06).

However, the communiqué released by minister Nkulu goes on to state that due to January 17 falling on a Sunday this year, a day in lieu public holiday had been declared in the DR Congo on Monday, January 18, 2021 ("Compte tenu du fait que la journée du 17 janvier tombe un dimanche, cette fête est repoussée au lundi 18 janvier 2021.").

As an aside, it would appear that the remains of Patrice Emery Lumumba, whose assassination is being commemorated on January 17, are still being kept in Belgium.
