The Hong Kong Special Administrative Region Government has released its annual official list of the gazetted 2022 public holidays to be observed in Hong Kong ("General holidays for 2022" - 2022年公眾假期), in accordance with the Employment Ordinance and General Holidays Ordinance as well as amendments thereto, and in addition to the Statutory Holidays for 2022 as announced by the HKSAR Labour Department.

As was the case for the past 9 years (2020-05-18, 2019-05-31, 2018-05-11, 2017-05-05, 2016-05-01, 2015-05-09, 2014-04-25, 2013-04-19 and 2012-04-29), the aforementioned list of calendar year 2022 Hong Kong public holidays is in line with the 2011 changes in the legislation governing non-working bank holidays and public holidays in the Hong Kong SAR (2011-12-26, 2011-12-15, and 2011-11-10), which stemmed from the review of day in lieu public holidays, announced more than a decade ago by then Hong Kong's Chief Executive, Donald Tsang (2010-02-15).

In 2022, as was the case on some other occasions (2014-04-25, 2009-04-25 and 1998-05-13), 2 public holidays will fall on the same date, thus requiring a special treatment ("As Labour Day and the Birthday of the Buddha in 2022 both fall on a Sunday, the day following them will be designated as a general holiday in substitution. In addition, since the day following the Chinese Mid-Autumn Festival in 2022 falls on a Sunday, the second day following that Festival will be designated as a general holiday in substitution. Furthermore, as Christmas Day in 2022 falls on a Sunday, the second weekday after Christmas Day will be designated as a general holiday in substitution.").

Finally, recall that the government of Hong Kong has gazetted the Employment (Amendment) Bill 2021 which will increase the number of statutory holidays in Hong Kong, from 12 days to 17, over the 9-year period from 2022 to 2030 (2021-03-06).
