Nepalese Extends Scope Of Maghe Sankranti Public Holiday

A spokesperson of Nepal's Home Ministry has announced that, at today's meeting of the Council of Ministers, it was decided to declare Thursday, January 14, 2021, as a full public holiday in Nepal on the occasion of Maghe or Makar Sankranti.

Makar Sankranti was included in last spring's (2020-03-31) gazetted list of official non-working public holidays in Nepal for the Nepalese year 2077 (April 2020-April 2021), but only for certain ethnic communities.

In related news, five local units of the Gorkha district have declared a regional public holiday on Monday, January 11, 2021, to mark National Unity Day and the 299th birth anniversary of King Prithvi Narayan Shah, the unifier of modern Nepal.
