The Minister of Sports of Papua New Guinea, Justin Tkatchenko, has announced that Friday, January 8, 2021, had been declared a one-off public holiday to honour Sir Mekere Morauta ("On behalf of Prime Minister James Marape, I would like to announce that this Friday, January 8, will be a nationwide public holiday").

The aforementioned declaration of Friday, January 8, 2021, as a one-off public holiday in Papua New Guinea, thus amends the list of official Papua New Guinea public holidays for the calendar year 2021 as contained in the PNG National Gazette G583, issued last September(2020-09-04).

Minister Tkatchenko went on to state that "This is now setting a precedent and a template for future State funerals going on into the future. This is about setting new protocols, programs and working templates for us to go by for future events such as this".
