Latvia Announces 2023 Public Holidays

The Ministry of Welfare of the government of Latvia has released the draft rules "On the transfer of working days in 2023" annual list of non-working national public holidays, and bridge non-working public holidays in Latvia, for the upcoming calendar year 2023.

In 2023, the working day on Friday, May 5, has been moved to Saturday, May 20, 2023.

For many years, the Government of Latvia followed the practice of declaring additional, one-off, bridge public holidays that are compensated by the same number of Saturdays being declared as regular working days (2014-11-15, 2013-10-25, 2013-01-16, 2012-01-04, 2010-01-08, 2009-05-21 and 2007-04-13).

This practice was stopped twice (2015-12-05 and 2011-01-05), but had been reinstated for six years (2020-05-28, 2019-05-10, 2018-12-17, 2017-12-14, 2017-02-26 and 2016-06-14) until 2022 when no bridge public holidays were declared (2021-05-31).

But, the lack of bridge public holidays in 2022 public holidays seemed to stem from the weekdays on which 2022 public holidays fall, and not by a deliberate attempt by the government to stop the practice.

A 2020 survey by the Latvian Ministry of the Economy, showed a support of almost 95 percent for the declaration of bridge holidays, compensated by working Saturdays.
