Nicaragua's Vice President, Rosario Murillo, has announced that the president of the National Assembly, Gustavo Porras, has introduced a bill which would amend article 66 of the Labor Code and include Mothers Day on May 30 in the list of national holidays for both the public and private sectors.

Mothers Day is usually observed as a public sector holiday limited to the public sector of the economy of Nicaragua (2021-05-19, 2017-05-19, 2016-05-24, 2014-05-27, 2013-05-24, 2012-05-28, 2012-04-25 and 2011-05-28).

In 1940, the Nicaraguan Mothers Day holiday was initially set on May 30. In 1976, it was moved from May 30 to the last Sunday of May ("so that every child can easily meet on that day with his mother, a case that is currently not possible for him when May 30 falls on a work day and his mother lives in a place other than her son's place of work"). But, in 1980, the then National Reconstruction Government Board moved it back to May 30.
