The Vice President of Suriname, Ronnie Brunswijk, has announced in the National Assembly that Javanese New Year, also called Sasi Sura, will henceforth be observed as a non-working public holiday in Suriname ("this day has now been equated with Sunday").
The aforementioned declaration of Javanese New Year on July 31, 2022, as a public holiday, thus amends the annual list of bank holidays and non-working public holidays in Suriname dates for the calendar year 2022, as released earlier this year (2022-01-10).
However, in a follow-up statement, Suriname's President Santokhi stated that "a committee has been set up that will examine the phenomenon of national holidays in the coming period" and that "Declaring a national day does not necessarily mean that it will be a day off that is equated with Sunday".
