Victoria Rules-Out Replacing AFL Public Holiday With Formula 1 Public Holiday

The Deputy Premier of Australia's State of Victoria, James Merlino, has ruled-out shifting the contentious AFL grand final eve public holiday to the Friday before the Australian Formula One Grand Prix ("We’ve got no plans to change our suite of public holidays. We think it serves Melbourne and Victoria well").

A decade ago (2011-07-17), the leader of the opposition, Daniel Andrews, had announced that he would support the push for an extra public holiday to celebrate AFL Grand Final week, if he became premier.

As the Premier-elect of the State Government of Victoria, shortly after his election (2014-12-01 and 2015-07-08), he kept his promise by declaring this new non-working public holiday in the Vistoria Government Gazette (as opposed to a possibly lengthy parliamentary debate).

Subsequent Victoria State Governments have committed themselves to keeping the "Friday before the AFL Grand Final" annual non-working public holiday (2018-09-21), and Opposition Leader, Matthew Guy, also stated that a Coalition government would keep it.

A bill to shift the AFL grand final holiday from the Friday before the game to the Monday after never got anywhere (2019-08-30).

Due to the pandemic, Government of Victoria moved the 2020 public holiday for the Friday before the AFL Grand Final, from September 25, 2020, to Friday, October 23, 2020, and renamed Thank You Day in 2020.
