Background Information

Governing Law: Official public holidays in Azerbaijan are governed by Chapter V Division 15 Article 105 of the February 1, 1999, labour code of the Republic of Azerbaijan.  Weekend Public Holidays: Beginning in 2006, public holidays that fall on a week-end are moved to the following Monday.  Amendments of the National Holidays were made to the Labour Code at the end of 2006. In particular, Independence Day (18 October), Constitution Day (12 November) and National Revival Day (17 November), remain as holidays in the calendar but have henceforth been considered working days.  Working Holidays: Azerbaijan has other days of note that, although they are sometimes referred to as holidays (and some may have been public holidays in the past), are now working days. Days of Note: • January 20: Memorial Day, also known as Day of Shehids', Martyrs' Day, Remembrance Day, Day of Mourning (regulated by Article 106 of the labour code of the Republic of Azerbaijan). • February 26: Day of Khojali Remembrance • March 31 - Genocide of Azerbaijanis.  Nagorno Karabakh This semi independent territory has its own set of official public holidays: • New Year: December 31, January 1, 2 • Orthodox Christmas: January 6 • Women's Day: March 8 • Genocide Memorial Day [1915]: April 24 • Worker's Solidarity Day: May 1 • Victory, Armed Forces & Shushi Liberation Day [1945, 1992]: May 9 • First Armenian Republic Day [1918]: May 28 • Independence Day [1991]: September 2.  Azerbaijan International Codes AZ and AZE (2 and 3-letter ISO3166 codes) and .az (ICANN national top-level internet domain). • Other Sources of Information The following specialized websites are also a good source of Azerbaijan information and news: National Bank of Azerbaijan (Azerbaijan central bank), ASI Hot Spots (security-related world events: terrorist threats, political strife, strikes, criminal activity, aviation incidents and health outbreaks), CIA World Factbook (Azerbaijan maps, demographics and economic statistics), the IFES (information covering upcoming elections, referenda, electoral structures and voter participation in Azerbaijan), and Wikipedia (includes Azerbaijan commemorative dates that are not necessarily public holidays).

Footnotes
*

Observance : Any entry in the Observance column indicates that, in Azerbaijan, the holiday may be regional or non-official or limited to certain religious and/or linguistic groups, or begin at a time other than midnight. Note that religious holidays are included only if they are national public holidays, or if the national labour code has specific holiday allowances for employees of specific religions. For more information, see our pages on the religious calendars of the world.

**

Religious Holidays : Public holidays in Azerbaijan that are based on certain religious calendars may be subject to local variations due to differing interpretations between different religious authorities, or to seemingly arbitrary changes in the date a holiday is celebrated because it conflicts with another holiday that is based on another calendar, or because the day of the holiday is deemed inauspicious (bad luck). To find out more about these uncertainties, see the footnote below, if any, for each specific religion.

(2)

Muslim Holidays : Muslim bank holidays, legal holidays and public holidays for Azerbaijan were evaluated using the Umm al-Qura Calendar of Saudi Arabia which is used in Saudi Arabia and in most of the Persian Gulf States. Holidays may occur a day later in countries outside the Gulf region. The sunrises, sunsets, moon phases, moonrises and moonsets used in these calculations are based on the location of Mecca (latitude 21.42°N, longitude, 39.82°E, GMT+3 hours, no summer time rules). For more details on Muslim holidays, see Muslim Calendar Holidays. For Salat (prayer times) calculations, see our Freeware page.
