14 Oct 2011 (Gazzetta Ufficiale della Repubblica Italiana-Rome) The amended version of last summer's Decree Law 138 overhauling Italian non-working public holidays has finally been gazetted and thus become law.
05 Sep 2011 (Senato della Repubblica-Roma) The Italian Government has announced that it would accept the recent amendment by the Italian Senate to the recent Decreto-Legge 13 agosto 2011, n. 138 and abandon its plan to move non-religious public holidays to the next Sunday.
17 Aug 2011 (Presidenza del Consiglio dei Ministri-Rome) The Italian Government has published the official decree implementing the austerity measures decided at last Friday's meeting No. 150 of the Italian Council of Ministers, and which includes changes in the dates when some public holidays are observed as non-working days.
13 Aug 2011 (Presidenza del Consiglio dei Ministri-Rome) In last night's meeting No.150, the Italian Council of Ministers approved a package of austerity measures which include the moving of the date when non-religious national public holidays are observed as non-working days.
29 Jan 2011 (Presidenza del Consiglio dei Ministri-Rome) In yesterday's meeting No.123, the Italian Council of Ministers has confirmed a one-off public holiday on Thursday, March 17, 2011, to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Unification of Italy.
15 Dec 2006 (ASI Group) Employees of Alitalia launched a 24-hour strike on 15 December 2006, which forced Alitalia to cancel 472 flights on 15 and 16 December, including at least 209 international flights. Most concerned are Rome and Milan airports.

Governing Law: Official public holidays in Italy are regulated by the Law 260 of May 27, 1949, Relative to Public Holidays (Gazzetta Ufficiale, 1949-05-31, no 124, pp.1415) as amended by the Law 90 of March 31 1954 (Gazzetta Ufficiale, 1954-04-22, no 92, p. 1186) and the Law 54 of March 5, 1977 (Gazzetta Ufficiale, 1977-03-07, no 63).
Regional Public Holidays: Offices and shops are also closed in the following cities on local feast days honoring their patron Saints. They may also close earlier on the eve of a holiday.
Saint Mark: April 25, Venice.
Saint John the Baptist: June 24, Florence, Genoa, Turin.
Saints Peter and Paul: June 29, Rome.
Saint Rosalia: July 15, Palermo.
Saint Gennaro: September 19, Naples.
Saint Petronio: October 4, Bologna.
Saint Saturnio: October 30, Cagliari.
Saint Giusto: November 3, Trieste.
Saint Nicola: December 6, Bari.
Saint Ambrose: December 7, Milan.
