Background Information

Weekend Public Holidays: Public holidays that occur on a weekend remain on that date (ie. they are not moved to another date).  Saturday Closings: Most stores in Austria close at 13:00 (1pm) on Saturdays.  Maundy Thursday (3 days before Easter) and Good Friday are not official national public holidays, but quite a few stores do close early. Banks are closed on Good Friday.  Christmas Eve (Weihnachten) is not one of the official public holidays but banks are closed on that day, and it is celebrated in the evening. Also, many stores close in the afternoon and don't reopen until December 27.  New Year's Eve is also a day when many places may close early.  Regional Days Each region has a patron saint day, when government offices and schools are closed: • Burgenland (B): 11-nov (St. Martin), • Kärnten (K): 19-mar (St. Josef), • Niederösterreich (NÖ): 15-nov (St. Leopold), • Oberösterreich (OÖ): 4-may (St. Florian), • Salzburg (S): 24-sep (St. Rupert), • Steiermark (ST): 19-mar (St. Josef), • Tirol (T): 19-mar (St. Josef), • Vorarlberg (V):19-mar (St. Josef), • Wien/Vienna (W): 15-nov (St. Leopold).  Austria International Codes AT and AUT (2 and 3-letter ISO3166 codes) and .at (ICANN national top-level internet domain). • Other Sources of Information The following specialized websites are also a good source of Austria information and news: Austrian National Bank (Austria central bank), ASI Hot Spots (security-related world events: terrorist threats, political strife, strikes, criminal activity, aviation incidents and health outbreaks), CIA World Factbook (Austria maps, demographics and economic statistics), the IFES (information covering upcoming elections, referenda, electoral structures and voter participation in Austria), and Wikipedia (includes Austria commemorative dates that are not necessarily public holidays).
