Western Australia Considering Public Holidays Shake-Up Western Australia Department of Labour Relations and Commerce (Perth) The Premier of the State of Western Australia, Roger Cook, has indicated that WA's public holidays could soon be realigned with those observed on the east coast, potentially as early as next year, and that that review may also introduce an additional public holiday. Mentioned as on the shortlist for date changes are: WA Day, the King's Birthday, and Labour Day. Recall that, last November, Premier Cook, had already indicated that he was open to the idea of moving the Western Australia Day public holiday closer to summer, stating that "I think it makes sense to explore how we might better align the date of the WA Day public holiday, particularly to coincide with our warmer months around summer", and adding that "I am open to reviewing the date of the public holiday in the future, as part of broader reforms that look at maximising any economic benefits". Originally called Foundation Day until 2011, WA Day is observed on the first Monday of winter, and for the past few years, that date has seen heavy rains.

Lithuanian MPs Vote To Continue Debate On New January 13 Public Holiday Lietuvos Respublikos Seimas (Vilnius) The Seimas' (Lithuania's Parliament) has decided to continue its debate on declaring January 13th a new annual public holiday, following its rejection by a vote of 78-33-8 of the Seimas Committee on Social Affairs and Labor recommendation to reject the January 13 public holiday bill. Recall that, this past January, Seimas speaker Skvernelis introduced a bill containing amendments to remove January 13, the Day of Defenders of Freedom, from the Law on Memorial Days and instead include it in the Labor Code a non-working annual public holiday. Next year will be the 35th anniversary of the January 13, 1991, events when Soviet military units stormed the Vilnius TV tower and the building of the Radio and Television Committee, leading to 14 civilian deaths. The January 13 bill was passed last January in its first reading by a vote of 43 in favor, 3 against, and 27 abstentions. Following that vote, the Seimas decided to ask the Government’s opinion on the draft legislation amending the Labour Code and the Law on Memorable Days and return to the issue in the spring session due to start on March 10th. Since then there has been strong legislative pushback against the choice of either May 1 or November 2 as the public holiday to cancel in compensation for the new January 13 public holiday.
