Chile Makes 3 Public Holidays Moveable

(Posted on Friday, March 10, 2000)

Almost 10 years after being introduced as a bill in front of the Chilean legislature, the Law 19.668 of March 8, 2000, was signed into law, making 3 current public holidays move to the nearest Monday.

As per the gazetted text, the public holidays of Corpus Christi (60 days after Eatser), San Pedro y San Pablo (June 29), and the Aniversario del Descubrimiento de América (Columbus Day on October 12), will henceforth be observed on the Monday nearest to their traditional date (trasladados al lunes más cercano).

Of course, as Corpus Christi always occurs on a Thursday, the new law implies that, in Chile, the Corpus Christi public holiday will always be observed the Monday before Corpus Christi (ie. 57 days after Easter Sunday).

The aforementioned law, "Dicta normas sobre feriados", was introduced as a Proyecto de ley almost 10 years ago, on April 9, 1991.
