Following today's Cabinet meeting, the government of Indonesia has announced changes to the public holidays of the last 2 months of 2002, in the form of 4 additional public holidays.
These, so called, "cuti bersama" (joint holidays) are meant to link the November and December 2002 public holidays with nearby weekends, to give Indonesians an incentive to travel in Indonesia.
Apparently this new policy is a reaction to the sharp drop in international tourism, following the recent terrorist bombings in Bali. The difference between "cuti bersama" (joint holidays) and the usual "hari libur nasional" (national public holidays) is that joint holidays are deducted from an employees yearly vacation tally.
For 2002, these joint holidays are: December 5, 9, 10, and 26, in addition to the previously declared public holidays of December 6, 7, and 25.
