With the the 40th anniversary of majority rule in the Bahamas, yesterday, there have been renewed calls on the government to make January 10 one of the Bahamas public holidays.
Currently, the Jaunuary 10th holiday is only briefly "observed" during a government ceremony, and is a regular working day.
The idea of a January 10 public holiday was first floated last summer (27-Jul-2006), in the minority report from the cultural commission, appointed by Prime Minister Christie, which has instead proposed that January 10, the anniversary of majority rule, be named National Heroes Day, while the October Discovery Day public holiday be renamed Encounter Day.
