Chile's Easter Island May Get Its Own Public Holiday

(Posted on Monday, June 11, 2007)

The Chamber of Deputies of Chile approved a constitutional reform that designates both Easter Island (Rapa Nui) and the Juan Fernández archipelago as special territories.

These territories will now be able to establish many of their own laws, as well as set up new local government positions, and may very well declare their own public holiday, more related to its inhabitants' Polynesian ancestry, than the Catholic public holidays of Chile.
