Romania's lower house of Parliament passed a law making August 15 (the feast of the Dormition of the Most Holy Mother of God, also know as the Assumption) a public holiday, starting in 2009.
This follows a request of Romania's President, Traian Basescu, and of the Patriarch of the Romanian Orthodox Church (19-Aug-2008)
However, August 15 falls on a Saturday in 2009 and on a Sunday in 2010, so Romanians will have to wait until 2011 to take advantage of this new public holiday (public holidays that fall on a weekend date are not moved to the following Monday in Romania).
Luckily for Romanians, one of the 2 Pentecost public holidays voted by parliament earlier this year (18-Mar-2008), always falls on a Monday.
