The Northern Territory Committee co-chair, Fran Kilgariff, has responded for recent calls for Territory Day to become a public holiday by saying that such a public holiday would be fitting "when we do become a state".
The debate was recently re-ignited by the Territory's first chief minister, Paul Everingham, who fought for and won self-government 31 years ago, who argued against statehood because "it wouldn't change anything".
The general consensus is that if such a new public holiday was declared, then it would be compensated by cancelling the Queen's Birthday public holiday in the Northern Territory.
