Australia's State of New South Wales has passed laws that ban most shops from opening on public holidays.
NSW shops, including all major retailers, supermarkets, hardware and "general" stores will have to close on Christmas Day, Boxing Day, Easter Sunday and Good Friday, except in cases where individual shop owners are able to open if they can prove there is a compelling community need.
NSW shops will be able to open for half a day on ANZAC day.
Shops in the Sydney CBD (Central Business District), Newcastle CBD and in Cabramatta are exempt from the new law, as are small businesses.
