Bhutan Changes Coronation Anniversary Public Holiday Date

A circular from Bhutan's Home Ministry has announced that the Coronation Day of Druk Gyalpo Jigme Khesar public holiday will be observed, starting in 2009, on November 1st, rather than November 6, as had been previously announced.

The date of November 6 included in the official announcement of 2009 public holidays in Bhutan (23-Dec-2008), included November 6 as the date of the Coronation Day of Druk Gyalpo Jigme Khesar public holiday, but this date was that of the actual 2008 coronation (04-Nov-2008).

In addition, Bhutan's Home Minister, Lyonpo Minjur Dorji, announced that, as November 1st falls on a Sunday, this year, the government had declared the Monday, November 2, 2009 as an additional day in lieu public holiday. But Minister Lyonpo Minjur Dorji did stress that this day in lieu was a one-off event, "It’s the first year and an exception this year only".

The Home Ministry did not however confirm that the Blessed Rainy Day public holiday, cancelled in 2007 (03-Jan-2007) would be restored this year, as had been announced earlier this year (19-Jan-2009).
