The Bulgarian Orthodox Church could soon decide to revert to the usage of the Julian Calendar, meaning that the Christmas public holiday in Bulgaria would be celebrated on January 7 instead of December 25.
On December 20, 2009, the Holy Synod of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church will hold a meeting to consider the change so that Christmas be celebrated on January 7. If approved, it may mean that there would be no Christmas public holiday in Bulgaria in 2010, as the December 25, 2010, public holiday would be moved to January 7, 2011.
Bulgaria has been using the Gregorian Calendar since 1916, and the Christmas public holiday, when it was restored after the fall of communism, was set as December 25.
