India Extends Janamashtami To Himachal Pradesh

(Posted on Tuesday, July 14, 2009)

India's State government of Himachal Pradesh has declared Friday, August 14, 2009, as an additional gazetted public holiday on account of this year's Janamashtami.

The announcement does not explain why this hitherto un-gazetted public holiday was added at such short notice, but a government spokesperson did add that it was not declared under Section 25 of the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881, as is usually the case (see, for example, 29-Apr-2009 and 20-Apr-2009).

Technically the decree only applies to the employees working in all Government offices, Boards Corporations, and Educational Institutions. However, a state government spokesman said in a later release that daily wages employees could also avail themselves of the public holiday.
