Netherlands Antilles Urged To Declare Emancipation Day Public Holiday

(Posted on Saturday, July 4, 2009)

Source: Netherlands Antilles Daily Herald (Philipsburg)

The President of the Netherlands Antilles Workers Institute for Organised Labour (WIFOL), Theophilus Thompson, and Windward Islands Civil Servants/Private Sector Union (WICSU/PSU) President, William Reed, have announced that they will lobby the government to declare Emancipation Day a public holiday.

One of the reasons for the opposition of the government and business community to the declaration of a new public holiday, is that a new public holiday, Kingdom Day, was declared just last year (09-May-2008).

Although this new public holiday was eventually compensated by the cancellation of the Antilles' Day public holiday (12-Sep-2008), the business community is still sore about the granting a day in lieu for the Queen's Birthday (28-Apr-2006) which led to an additional public holiday in 2006.
