South Africa's chief director of communications for the Department of Education, Dr Granville Whittle, has announced that South African schools will enjoy an extended holiday break during the FIFA 2010 World Cup.
In order to avoid pupil and teacher absenteeism during the FIFA 2010 World Cup, hosted by South Africa, the recently approved and gazetted upcoming school calendar includes 22 days of winter holidays, instead of the usual 15.
The education department had originally proposed a five-week school break (19-Apr-2008), but had not come to a final decision, even as it later announced the dates of the 2010 special one-off bridge holidays for schools (12-Nov-2008).
