South Africa's labour federation general secretary, Zwelinzima Vavi, has appealed to the government to pass legislation so that retail workers would not be forced to work on "the most emotional" public holidays such as Freedom Day on April 27, Workers Day on May 1, Youth Day on June 16 and Women's Day on August 9.
Reactions to the proposal, from Durban Chamber of Commerce CEO, Gugu Mazibuko, and chief economist at Econometrix, Dr Azar Jammine, are mutedly neutral.
