The Minister of Labour of Spain's autonomous region of Catalonia, Mar Serna, is asking the central government for more flexibility in moving mid-week public holidays to the nearest Monday.
Currently, each of Spain's regions can only decide on the choice and date of 2 of the renunciable national public holidays (Epiphany and Maundy Thursday) and 2 regional public holidays left to the discretion of each region.
In 1995, when both the December 6 and December 8 annual national public holidays fell in mid-week, the Catalan Ministerio de Trabajo had tried to avoid losing a week of work due to an impending superpuente, by moving the December 6 and 8 public holidays to the first and second Mondays of December, respectively. However, this attempt was met by a flat-out refusal by the Catholic Church, whose Episcopal Conference, at the time, declared that the Immaculate Conception (December 8) was an un-movable (irrenunciable) holiday.
