Tonga's Privy Council has declared Monday, August 3, 2009, as a day in lieu public holiday to commemorate HM King George Tupou V's 61st birthday, which falls on a annually on August 1st.
The Prime Minister's Office confirmed in a statement that, although August 1 falls on Saturday, this year, the public holiday for the king's birthday would be observed on the following Monday,in the the same manner as for public holidays that fall on a Sunday.
Though Tonga's King was born on May 4th, August 1st was made an annual public holiday, the Official Birthday of the reigning Sovereign of Tonga, to coincide with the date of the King's coronation (08-Dec-2006).
