Turkmenistan's President, Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, has signed a decree declaring Monday, October 26, 2009, as a one-off non-working public holiday on account of the upcoming 18th anniversary of independence of Turkmenistan.
The aforementioned additional non-working public holiday will be compensated by Saturday, October 24, 2009, having been declared a regular working day (ie. not a day off).
As a consequence, Turkmenistan will get a period of 4 consecutive days of public holidays; from Sunday, October 25, to Wednesday, October 28, 2011, inclusively.
The possibility given to the President of Turkmenistan to move non-working days to extend public holidays was part of the changes made in the Turkmenistan Act No 207-III of 15 August 2008 to amend the Labour Code of 1972 (as amended in 1992), which amended article 66 of Turkmenistan's Labour Code, the part dealing with Holidays and Memorable Days (15-Aug-2008).
