Iraq Declares Ashura Public Holiday

(Posted on Monday, December 13, 2010)

Iraq's Secretariat of the Council of Ministers has declared that Thursday, December 16, 2010, would be a public sector holiday for all government departments on account of the upcoming anniversary of the martyrdom of Imam Hussein (Ashura).

Despite the fact that Iraq overhauled its list of official public holidays, a couple of years ago (08-Feb-2008), such last-minute declarations are common (06-Dec-2010).
