Philippines Restores Eid al-Adha As National Public Holiday

Late last month, Philippines' President, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo (PGMA), signed into law Republic Act 9849 which declares the tenth day of Zhul-Hijja, the twelfth month of the Islamic calendar, a national non-working public holiday to coincide with the annual observance of Eidul Adha.

This announcement is yet another flip-flop on the issue of the status of the Eid al-Adha (Feast of Sacrifice) public holiday.

In the spring of 2009 (05-Apr-2009), Proclamation No. 1808, had declared Friday-Saturday, November 27-28, 2009, as nationwide non-working public holidays to mark the celebration of the Eid'l Adha (Feast of Sacrifice).

This was later confirmed in Proclamation 1841 (22-Jul-2009) which officially declared 10 regular public holidays, four special non-working public holidays and one special public holiday for the calendar year 2010.

Then, late last October, Malacañang Palace issued Proclamation No. 1808-A, which revised Proclamation No. 1808 and declared November 27 and 28, 2009 (Eid'l Adha) as regional non-working public holidays, only to be observed in the Autonomous Region of Muslim Mindanao (ARMM).

It is not clear yet if the ARMM will get a second day of public holiday, as was the case last year.
