Bangladesh's home minister, Shahara Khatun, has announced that the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) had proposed to the government that it declare one-off public holidays during the upcoming World Cup "to ensure smooth traffic movement".
The first proposed one-off public holiday, and the most likely to be approved, would be on Thursday, February 17, 2011, the date of the Cricket World Cup opening ceremonies.
Most of the ensuing matches will be played on Fridays (February 25, March 4, March 11 and March 25) or Saturdays (February 19 and March 19), which are the weekend days in Bangladesh. But 2 other matches are scheduled to occur on a working day (March 14 and March 23), and these are the 2 additional one-off public holidays that have been requested by the DMP.
