Dominican Republic Mid-Week Public Holidays Final

The Dominican Republic's lower house of parliament (Cαmara de Diputados) has approved by a vote of 96 to 1, a bill recently-passed by the senate, and which removes the January 6 and 26 annual non-working public holidays from the scope of the law 139-97 which regulates non-working public holidays in the Dominican Republic.

Last month (13-Jun-2013), the Dominican Republic's Senate had passed into law a bill which amends articles 2 and 4 of law 139-97 which regulates the moving of the dates of mid-week non-working public holidays in the Dominican Republic.

Those amendments had been introduced 2 years ago (28-Jan-2011), then passed by the Senate (01-Apr-2011), but were then temporarily lapsed in the lower house (26-Jan-2012). As per these amendments 2 annual public holidays have been added to the list of fixed-date public holidays covered by the Ley nϊmero 139-97 which governs the observance of mid-week public holidays (19-Jun-1997): the Dνa de los Santos Reyes (January 6) and the Natalicio de Juan Pablo Duarte (January 26).

This leaves only the May 1, August 16 and November 6 public holidays to move when they fall on a Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday or Friday.

A similar, more modest, amendment had been introduced last fall (14-Nov-2012) whereby the Duarte's Birthday public holiday would be observed on its set date, but only once in the calendar year 2013, because January 26, 2013 will be the 200th anniversary of Juan Pablo Duarte.
