Paraguay Moves Paz del Chaco Public Holiday Portal Paraguayo de Noticias (PPN) Paraguay's presidential spokesperson has confirmed that the upcoming Paz del Chaco public holiday would be observed on Monday, June 16, 2025, rather than on its set date of June 12. The aforementioned announcement is in line with the Decree No.3047, signed last December by the President of the Republic of Paraguay, Santiago Peña, and which moved 2 of Paraguay's annual public holidays in 2025, the Día de los Héroes de la Patria from March 1 to 3, and the Día de la Paz del Chaco (from June 12 to June 16), in the context of law 1723/01. The Ley 1723 del 29 de junio de 2001 (Que Autoriza Al Poder Ejecutivo A Trasladar Los Feriados Nacionales Al Dia Lunes) gives the president of Paraguay the authority to move any, or all, mid-week public holidays to a nearby Monday (except New Year, Independence Day, the día de La Virgen de Caacupé, Maundy Thursday, and Good Friday). Despite its passage, over 20 years ago, and regular calls for the executive to avail itself of its prerogative to move mid-week public holidays to a nearby Monday, the provisions of law 1723/01 had rarely been used before 2012. But, since 2012 the practice has become an annual one, apart from 2020, when the pre-pandemic Decreto número 2757 was later partially abrogated by the Decreto número 4040.

Nepal Announces Date Of 2025 Bhoto Jatra Public Holiday Nepalese Ministry of Home Affairs (Kathmandu) The spokesperson and joint secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs of Nepal, Ram Chandra Tiwari, has announced that Sunday, June 1st, 2025, had been declared as the date of this year's Bhoto Jatra (the final event of the Rato Machchindranath Jatra) non-working public holiday in Nepal's Kathmandu Valley, namely the districts of Kathmandu Federal Capital, Bhaktapur, and Lalitpur. In 2024, the Bhoto Jatra was observed much later (on August 4), but ordinarily the event and associated public holiday is observed around the month of June, with the exception of 2015 when the chariot procession was halted by the April 25 earthquake, and resumed on September 21, leading to a Bhoto Jatra non-working public holiday in Nepal's Kathmandu Valley the following month. Recall that, in last February's list of B.S. 2082 public holidays in Nepal (वि.सं. २०८२ सालको बैंक बिदाको सूची), the 2025 Bhoto Jatra had been listed, but left as "to be announced". Despite being declared on a Sunday, the aforementioned will be a day off, as Nepal has observed a one-day weekend on Saturdays, for decades, apart for 2 brief intervals, in 2000-2001, and in the spring of 2022, when a two-day weekend was tried briefly.

Ireland Mulls Donegal July Public Holiday Houses of the Oireachtas- National Parliament (Dublin) Donegal County Council has backed calls for a new public holiday to be established to commemorate St Colmcille, one of Ireland's three patron saints, and a native of Donegal. A similar clarification was issued again at the end of December 2023 by the Jordanian Ministry of Labour, though a couple of exceptions remain to that rule.

Taiwan Decrees Restoration and Extension of 4 Public Holidays Taiwan News (Taipei) The Taiwanese Presidential Office has issued a presidential decree promulgating the Implementation Act of Commemorative and Festival Days (紀念日及節日實施條例) legislation, passed earlier this month. Recall that, last February, the Kuomintang (KMT) had announced that it intended to give priority to promoting the Draft Regulations on the Implementation of Memorial Days and Holidays (紀念日及節日實施條例草案) with the aim of restoring the 7-day holiday (7天假) for workers. The seven-day entitlement refers to 7 annual public holidays which were removed in 2016 as part of labor law amendments that mandated moving to a two-day weekend for all workers. In December 2023, the then Kuomintang (KMT) Presidential candidate, Hou Yu-ih, had announced that he would bring back December 25 as a an annual public holiday in Taiwan if he won the then upcoming presidential election (this public holiday would not be related to Christmas, but to the anniversary of the adoption of a new Constitution on December 25, 1946). Finally, earlier this month, in a surprise legislative voting coalition, the Taiwanese Legislative Yuan passed the final reading of the Implementation Act of Commemorative and Festival Days legislation.

Mongolia Declares June 11 Buddha Day Public Holiday Montsame Agency (Ulaanbaatar) The Cabinet of the Government of Mongolia announced that the upcoming Buddha Day public holiday would be observed on Wednesday, June 11, 2025. Recall that, in the autumn of 2019, the Mongolian Parliamentary State Structure Standing Committee had backed a draft bill, presented by MP D.Oyunkhorol, to declare Buddha Day (Vesak) as a new annual non-working public holiday in Mongolia. And, in late 2019, the Mongolian Parliament approved amendments to the law on public holidays of Mongolia, whereby Buddha Day, celebrating the birth, enlightenment and death of Gautama Buddha, will be a new annual public holiday in Mongolia, beginning on June 5, 2020. Initially, Mongolian media reports had pegged this new Buddha Day public holiday, if approved, as occurring for the first time on May 7, 2020, but at the time, we noted, in our post of October 23, 2019, that we felt that June 5, 2020, was more likely, if based on the Tögs Buyant Mongolian lunar calendar, rather than the simplistic "Day of the Full Moon in the month of May" rule mentioned in these same media reports.
