Botswana Announces Makwala Public Holiday

(Posted on Thursday, August 10, 2017)

Botswana's Sports Minister, Thapelo Olopeng, has announced that a one-off public holiday in Botswana would be declared to honour Isaac Makwala's performance at the World Athletics Championship

The aforementioned announcement that a one-off public holiday in Botswana would be declared to honour Isaac Makwala ("The president has set aside a certain day for him" and "It will be a public holiday for people to come and meet Makwala and all over the country there will be celebrations with music and dancing"), would thus amend the list of official non-working public holidays in Botswana for the calendar year 2017, which was announced, late last year (25-Dec-2016).

Such one-off declaration of public holidays in Botswana are rather rare, and are usually limited to electoral occasions (16-Oct-2014, 07-Aug-2014 and 07-Sep-2009), though not always (03-Sep-2016).
