Background Information

May Day/Labour Day: In 2002 the date of this public holiday was changed,, to bring it in line with the UK's corresponding public holiday which is set for the first Monday in May, but it set it back to May 1st starting in 2003, 2004, 2005, and 2006. In 2007, it was again changed to the first Monday in May.  National Day is celebrated on September 10, to commemorate the 1967 referendum where with a massive majority the people of Gibraltar voted to reject annexation by Spain.  Other Sources of Information For information not covered here, see the following specialized websites: Bank of England (Gibraltar central bank), ASI Hot Spots (security-related world events: terrorist threats, political strife, strikes, criminal activity, aviation incidents and health outbreaks), CIA World Factbook (maps, demographic and economic statistics), Copp Clark (financial markets' trading hours, settlement holidays and currency non-clearing days), and the IFES Election Guide (information covering upcoming elections, referenda, electoral structures and past voter participation).
