08 Oct 2009 (La Tercera-Santiago) A bill was introduced in Chile's Senate by senators Jaime Naranjo and Jaime Gazmuri, that would eliminate Chile's October 12 public holiday and replace it with a June 24 public holiday to coincide with the Mapuche Indian new year (We Tripantu) and to be called the "Día de los Pueblos Originarios".  12 Sep 2009 (Diario Financiero Online-Santiago) The chamber of commerce of Chile's capital, the Cámara de Comercio de Santiago (CCS), has announced that most shops in the metropolitan area would remain closed on Saturday, September 19, 2009.  04 Sep 2009 (La Segunda-Santiago) Chile's Congress is to consider a bill by deputy Cristián Nicolás Monckeberg, that would make September 17th an annual public holiday, beginning with next year's bicentennial celebrations.  03 Jun 2009 (Agencia Bolivariana de Noticias-Santiago de Chile) Chile's Senate has approved a bill which will move the date of the upcoming Presidential elections (and associated public holiday) from Friday, December 11, to Sunday December 13, 2009.  29 May 2009 (Chile.com-Santiago) A group of Chilean parliamentarians from the UDI, PPD, as well as some independents, has introduced legislation that would make Friday, September 17, and Monday, September 20, 2010, one-off public holidays.  06 Apr 2009 (Radio universidad de Chile-Santiago) The Chilean President's Deputy Chief of Staff (subsecretario de la Presidencia), Edgardo Riveros, announced that, in the coming days, President Bachelet would send to Parliament a bill that would move from Friday, December 11, to Sunday, December 13, the date of the upcoming elections and of the associated public holiday.  17 Mar 2009 (Servicio Electoral-Santiago) Chile's electoral commission has released the Cronograma Electoral of the upcoming Presidential and Parliamentary elections, confirming the date of Friday, December 11, for the first round of these elections, and that it will be an official public holiday.  14 Jan 2009 (Radio Infinita-Santiago) A group of parliamentarians from both sides of the aisle have started discussing the possibility of moving the upcoming Presidential and Legislative Elections from Friday, December 11, to Sunday, December 13, 2009.  10 Dec 2008 (Cuarta Cibernetica-Santiago) A group of Chilean creative ad agencies has banded together and created a movement asking the government to declare Friday, January 2, 2009, a bridge public holiday between January 1st and the weekend.  09 Nov 2008 (El Mercurio-Santiago) A recent article in The Economist quotes sources in the Government of Chile as saying that it was considering removing some catholic public holidays related to the Virgin Mary, such as July 16, August 15, and December 8.  11 Oct 2008 (Diario La Tribuna-Santiago) After almost 2 years of tractations (see our post of November 10, 2006), at noon, yesterday, Chile's President, Michelle Bachelet, signed law 20.299 making October 31st a new annual public holiday to coincide with Reformation Day and to be called "Día Nacional de las Iglesias Evangélicas y Protestantes".  01 Sep 2008 (Terra Networks-Valparaíso) A draft law has been submitted for review to Chile's Comisión de Gobierno Interior which would make the day of the observance of the recently declared Día de la Virgen del Carmen (July 16) move to the following Monday if it occurs on mid-week weekday (as is the case for other public holidays, such as the October 12 public holiday).  10 Sep 2004 (Diario Oficial De La Republica De Chile-Santiago) After a few weeks of hesitation, Chile finally approved Law 19.973, which declares Friday, September 17, 2004, as a one-off public holiday, as compensation for the fact that this year, the September 18 and 19 public holidays both fall on a weekend.  More News Updates For the full version of the summarized news items above, and older news items not displayed above, go to the Chile public holidays news and updates page, or worldwide public holidays news and updates page, or subscribe to one of our free email newsletters.


Background Information

Independence Day and Army Day: unofficially, the celebration of these 2 consecutive public holidays can last for around a week, depending on when it falls (for example, if the 18th is a Wednesday, celebrations extend from Saturday the 14th, through Sunday the 22nd).
