20 Nov 2007 (Milenio + Univision) The Government of Cuba decreed 2 new annual public holidays, December 31 and January 2, to take effect immediately (Decreto Ley No. 254 del 18 de septiembre de 2007).
19 Jun 2007 (Prensa Latina) The Cuban Government has declared today, Tuesday, June 19, 2007, a national day of mourning, following last night's death of Vilma Espín, Cuba's unofficial First Lady for the last 47 years.
20 Dec 2006 The Minister of Labor and Social Secutrity has decreed that Tuesday January 2, 2006, would be a one-off additional public holiday.
02 Dec 1998 (Reuters-La Habana) Cuba's Politburo has announced that the Cuban Communist Party had asked the State Council to declare Christmas Day (December 25) as an annual public holiday for all citizens (para cristianos y no cristianos, creyentes y no creyentes).

Christmas: The celebration of Christmas as a public holiday in Cuba, was stopped in 1970 (to use that extra working day to increase sugar production). But, after a 30 year absence, Cuba re-established Christmas as one of its public holidays, in 1998, on the eve of the visit of Pope John Paul II .
