Background Information

Governing Law: Official public holidays in Haïti are regulated by articles 107-119, in particular 110 and 111, of the Décret du 24 février 1984 actualisant le Code du travail du 12 septembre 1961 as modified by the Arrêté déclarant jours fériés les 1er et 2 novembre, jours de la Toussaint et des Morts of 2001.  Working Holidays: The above-mentioned decree listed some holidays as non-working (jours fériés chômés), and some as working holidays (jours fériés non chômés). The working holidays were originally the following: jour des Amériques (April 14), la Fête-Dieu, Ascension, Assumption (August 15), the Anniversary of J.-J. Dessalines' Death (October 17), United Nations' Day (October 24), and All Saints' Day (November 1st). The decree entioned that some of these working holidays could, at the President's discretion, be converted to non-working holidays, and indeed many of the afore-mentioned are now non-working public holidays.  Haiti International Codes HT and HTI (2 and 3-letter ISO3166 codes) and .ht (ICANN national top-level internet domain). • Other Sources of Information The following specialized websites are also a good source of Haiti information and news: Central Bank of Haiti (Haiti central bank), ASI Hot Spots (security-related world events: terrorist threats, political strife, strikes, criminal activity, aviation incidents and health outbreaks), CIA World Factbook (Haiti maps, demographics and economic statistics), the IFES (information covering upcoming elections, referenda, electoral structures and voter participation in Haiti), and Wikipedia (includes Haiti commemorative dates that are not necessarily public holidays).
