Background Information

Governing Law: Official public holidays in Namibia are regulated by the Section 1 of the Public Holidays Act, 1990 (Act No. 26 of 1990);, as amended by the Public Holidays Amendment Act 16 of 2004, which provides for 12 official public holidays annually. The Holidays Act replaced the Sunday Trading Proclamation 12 of 1919, the Lord’s Day Observance Proclamation 54 of 1921, and the Public Holidays Act 7 of 1987.   International Human Rights Day: The Public Holidays Act of 1990 was amended at the end of 2004 (Public Holidays Amendment Bill, B.12 - 2004) to rename “International Human Rights Day” of December 10, into "Day of the Namibian Women and International Human Rights Day”.  Weekend Public Holidays: If a public holiday falls on a Sunday the following Monday will be a public holiday, unless the Monday is already a public holiday.  One-off public holidays: The President may declare any day in a particular year as a public holiday by proclamation in the Government Gazette.  Two days, namely 9 February being Constitution Day and 24 October being United Nations Day are observance days in Namibia. Special events are usually organized to observe these days.  Day of the Namibian Child was proclaimed in 2001, by General Notice 250/2001 (GG 2610), but this date is not a public holiday.  Namibia International Codes NA and NAM (2 and 3-letter ISO3166 codes) and .na (ICANN national top-level internet domain). • Other Sources of Information The following specialized websites are also a good source of Namibia information and news: Bank of Namibia (Namibia central bank), ASI Hot Spots (security-related world events: terrorist threats, political strife, strikes, criminal activity, aviation incidents and health outbreaks), CIA World Factbook (Namibia maps, demographics and economic statistics), the IFES (information covering upcoming elections, referenda, electoral structures and voter participation in Namibia), and Wikipedia (includes Namibia commemorative dates that are not necessarily public holidays).
