The Government of Canada's province of Newfoundland has announced that the annual Discovery Day holiday, would be a statutory public holiday in Newfoundland in 1997, to mark the 500th anniversary of John Cabot's landing in Newfoundland.

Discovery Day was a statutory holiday in Canada's province of Newfoundland from 1962 until 1992.
