Minister of Tourism, Rubén Blades, has announced that he was in favor of the return of the practice of moving fixed date public holidays to adjoin a weekend so as to have long weekends on the occasion of public holidays.
The bill currently being drafted would move public holidays that occur on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays to the nearest weekend, and public holidays that occur on Saturdays and Sundays, would move to the next Monday (though some public holidays would be exempted from this new rule).
Días puentes had been established by decree in 1997 by, then President, Ernesto Pérez Balladares (1997-07-04), but after a few failed attempts (1998-12-01), a law was voted in late 1999 abrogating the system of días puentes public holidays (1999-11-01).
