Late last night, the Government of Honduras announced that it had added one day to the annual 9-day Holy Week public holidays given to the public sector, due to the same day's "triumph" of the Honduras football team against Mexico's. The public sector will therefore be on holidays from Friday, April 3, until Sunday, April 12, 2009, inclusively.
In addition, it was announced that the public holiday of April 14, falling on a Tuesday, this year, would be observed on Monday, April 20, 2009, instead. This last-minute moving of mid-week public holidays is permitted by the legislative decree 50-2003, but it is not systematically done (2008-09-16).
Finally, Honduras' Secretary of Education announced that it would also add Friday, April 3, 2009, as a holiday for all public schools of the country.
