Philippines Considering Reducing Number of Public Holidays In 2009

Earlier today, Philippines' Presidential Press Secretary, Cerge Remonde, said that President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo (PGMA) is open to a proposed reduction in the number of holidays, this year, to help the business sector cope with the global crisis.

He added, though, that a change to the recently announced list of 2009 public holidays (2009-01-07) would also require an amendment of Republic Act 9492 (2007-07-25), which provided for the rationalization of national holidays and declared certain days as special or regular public holidays.

However, these all-encompassing public holidays laws have often been flouted by President Arroyo (2007-08-09 and 2008-08-17), so anything is possible.
