Samoa September 7-8 Public Holidays Could Be Extended

The government of Samoa has re-confirmed the September 7-8 public holidays declared to give Samoans practice at driving on the right. In fact, faced with criticisms, Samoa's Prime Minister, Tuilaepa Sailele Malielegaoi, quipped that "if two public holidays is not enough for the switch, the government can extend it to one month" further adding that "there's no law to stop us from having a month off work".

Despite growing criticisms against the upcoming driving side change, no one has so far complained about the 2-day additional public holidays. Not many are likely either to complain about a month-long public holiday either.

The 2-day public holiday had been tentatively announced last summer (2008-07-24) when the date of the switch was first announced, and was officialized, earlier this year (2009-03-03).
