Earlier today, the Chief Minister of Malaysia's State of Melaka, Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam, declared a special, one-off, regional public holiday on Thursday, October 21, 2010, to celebrate the state being accorded developed state status.
Melaka's Chief Minister added that the holiday would apply to both the public and private sectors, with no replacement required.
Melaka obtained this status following a 10-year plan known as Melaka Maju 2010 after the state fulfilled the 32 criteria set by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD).
In the past, other Malaysian states have also declared state public holidays to commemorate the obtention of an international status, as was the case in Penang State to celebrate its status as a UNESCO World Heritage site (2010-06-17).
In related news, there is still no confirmation of a possible November 4 public holiday in Kelantan State (2010-10-08).
