The Premier of Australia's State of New South Wales (NSW), Kristina Keneally, announced today that the NSW Government would become the first jurisdiction in Australia to recognize Easter Sunday as a public holiday.
The change, to take effect as of 2011, means that NSW employees working on Easter Sunday would have to be paid penalty rates. For example, retail workers would have to be paid double time and a half compared with the usual Sunday rate of time and a half.
Presently, public holiday rates apply to the Good Friday, Holy Saturday, and Easter Monday public holidays.
