South Africa's Statistician General, Pali Lehohla, has been quoted as proposing that the upcoming 2011 national census day should be declared a non-working public holiday.

By law, the dates of South African presidential inaugurations (2009-04-18) and national elections are non-working public holidays (2009-02-10 1999-04-28 and 2004-02-24).

However, the law does not mandate a public holiday for census day.
